These pages contain a brief description of what we get up to and where we meet, it allows you to download the current programme of events and provides a facility to make further enquiries via email. It also tells you how much all of this costs - the cost is kept to a minimum commensurate with providing a high quality programme, with speakers from all walks of life and the Circle takes no profit from any of its activities.
Who are we?
The Russian Circle is a very varied group of people with a common interest in Russia, its people and/or its culture. We come from a wide variety of backgrounds, with academics, professionals, self-employed, working men and women and retired all mixing happily in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We boast a good mix of nationalities, with not just British and Russians but people from Kazakhstan, Latvia, Belarus, The Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova, Armenia and more.
What do we do?
Events are held monthly from Febuary to May and there is a Summer Party in June or July with the AGM being held in January. Events run again from September to December. These generally take one of two forms:
- Talks by those with specialist knowledge in their field. Speakers may be journalists, business leaders, university dons, Russian celebrities or members of the circle itself - in fact, anyone with something interesting to say and having a (broadly) Russian theme. Recently these talks have been held at one of a number of venues in Winchester and are now usually split between St Lawrence's Parish Hall on Colebrook Street and Harestock Social Club. Talks normally commence at 7.00pm and last for an hour or so. Attendance is free for members of the circle, whilst they cost £5.00 per person for visitors over 16 years of age.
- Concerts have been few and far between of late due to the high cost of these events but when available, commence at 7.00pm, are held in a variety of locations and most of them feature an eclectic range of classical music, (Mozart, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Glinka etc.), whilst occasionally we are treated to singers who might perform Russian folk music or 'Romances'. Concerts cost £10.00 for members, £15.00 for visitors and £5.00 for children 12-15. Children that are under 12 years old may attend without charge.
All talks and concerts are followed by an informal supper and chance to socialise and chat to speakers, musicians and, of course, each other. All coming to the supper are asked to bring something to eat and drink, with sandwiches, salads, quiches, hors d'œuvres and bottles of wine being very popular.
